Chef Jennifer DePalma “Chef of Distinction”

Chef Jen DePalma "Chef of Distinction"

Cupcake Wrapper Designed by KatieSheaDesign.com  © 2011 KatieSheaDesign

In July 2011,  Chef Jennifer DePalma competed on Bravo Tv’s  hit new series

 Rocco’s Dinner Party     http://www.bravotv.com/roccos-dinner-party

 Chosen the Winner!

She is the first woman to win this Distinctive Honor.  Along with bragging rights  she received the Grand Prize of $20,000.00!

The goal  being to see who would throw the best dinner party for Celebrity Author and  Chef  Rocco DiSpirito and his celebrity guests.   http://amzn.to/ptFWx3 Now EatThis9/27/11

Three  Chefs compete for the honor to be 1 of 2  Chefs chosen to cook for Rocco’s Themed Dinner Party for that particular evening by preparing and presenting their signature dish for Rocco to taste.

Rocco DiSpirito loved Chef Jen’s Signature dish Chicken Amore  so much he chose it as the winner of the signature dish challenge. Since then fans around the world have been asking for her Chicken Amore recipe!

The winner of the signature dish challenge then has the opportunity to choose 1 of three of Rocco’s dining rooms to serve their dinner party as well.

The two Chefs then meet with Celebrity Event Producer Jes Gordon  http://jesgordon.com/   and author of  ”Party Like a Rock Star”   http://amzn.to/PRTLKRCKSTR     to discuss and plan the décor for their chosen dining room.  Jes Gordon then designs  the chosen dining room based on the input of the  chef.   Jes’s  Blog also gives further design details  of each dinner party.   http://www.bravotv.com/roccos-dinner-party/season-1/blogs/jes-gordon/finding-your-focal-point

Jen chose the Terrace Room for her dinner party and had it decorated in a South Beach theme with white sofas, a tented dining table, tiki torches – a real Miami vibe.   When everyone walked in Jen’s party, they fell so in love with the stylish Miami-South Beach décor.  http://www.bravotv.com/roccos-dinner-party/season-1/blogs/rocco-dispirito/anything-for-jeff-ross?page=0,4

Jen started out with her Coco Loco Spritzer, made with vodka and coconut water.  Jen’s Pork Tenderloin was a good choice.   “But the best dish of the night was what she prepared to accommodate Jeff:  Matzoh Brei.  This traditional Passover dish is an omelet-like mixture of eggs and pieces of matzoh fried together. You can put other ingredients in it, like vegetables. It’s open to interpretation, and Jen’s was as Jeff put it: “Matzoh brei’s greatest moment!” It can be fattening too, but Jen brought hers in at 190 calories and 8 grams of fat.”  http://www.bravotv.com/roccos-dinner-party/season-1/blogs/rocco-dispirito/anything-for-jeff-ross?page=0,4

9/11 Remembrance Rose By Katie Shea Design

Remembering 9/11

Brooklyn ….Memorial Day Weekend 2010 Surrounded by Family, Friends….!

The conversations were heartwarming, diversified and comedic.  My husband even had one of the guests prank phone call our daughter asking her just one more time “Is it All about Trendz” a jewelry store in Manhattan that we all could not get straight in our heads.   Maybe it was the sun or the wine or just both.  We laughed so hard we could not breathe as our daughter called us all jerks and hung up for the third time!

My husband’s family have their roots in Brooklyn so many of the guests were from “The Neighborhood” and there was a lot of reminiscing. Our cousin Big Art joined in and the conversations ranged from how his hearing became impaired by the gunshots that were fired by his ears during his career as a NYC Transit cop to the POW bracelet he wears on his wrist.

We all examined the copper looking piece and discussed the names and inscriptions.  Big Art can appear to be rough and tumble but is in fact a kind and deeply caring man.  The bracelet has been worn by him since the late 60’s.  The POW represented on the bracelet was dated as missing since 1965.  My husband, myself and a few others recalled our grammar school years during the Vietnam War there were many bracelets worn with names inscribed representing men serving and missing in Vietnam.  Upon further inspection we became aware of another name inscribed more recently.  Big Art explained it was one of “His” that perished 9/11.  We all fell silent out of respect for the fallen.  My heart was silently breaking for him.  Big Art is immersed in taking care of “His own” meaning the families of the 9/11 fallen.  He is extremely proactive in preserving the memories of the men and honoring them.  Big Art, although retired for many years was one of the first responders arriving at the BIG Hole and piles of rubble hoping to rescue any survivors.

All of us briefly flashed back at the mention of the fallen man represented on Big Art’s bracelet to that day of horrifying tragedy, loss and uncertainty.  My mind flooded with the images of the second plane hitting the second tower and then both towers imploding shortly thereafter!

My husband and I had the longest phone call that day since he was blessed with one of the only working telephone lines.  He was awaiting his assignment from the Hospital he works for.  There were thousands of body bags arriving throughout the city hospitals and all were bracing for a rising death toll and injuries galore.  He was mandated to stay and work for however long it took to take care of the injured.  Phone service in NYC was at a minimum if any, so I was the conduit from the hospital staff to family members informing them of their loved ones safety.  We kept the line open for hours as I dialed on my cell phone and even put the cell phone to the receiver so people could connect and be comforted by the sound of the live voices.

Hours went by and finally my husband said we had to free the line.  I was deeply troubled since I did not know if this was going to be the last time I would ever hear his voice.  I became immobilized and kept repeating myself in an effort to keep him on the line.  Hanging up with him was like letting go of a drowning man.  I told myself I had to keep it together since we have 3 children and if I looked worried they would be worried.  I left them in school while all this was going on because I needed to collect myself to present to them a calm, confident mother.

Our drive home from Brooklyn brought us right past the World Trade Center site.  I usually do everything I can to avoid that whole area and today of all days we HAD to pass by because of Holland Tunnel traffic.  This time I forced myself to face the Big Hole and the beginnings of rebuilding.

Our friends James and Shea were snoozing in the back of the Van unaware that they were in the presence of a sacred ground.   All of my senses became heightened and I became acutely aware of utterances, murmurings and physical pain just being in close proximity to this tragic parcel of land.

I feel sad and guilty at the same time.  Sad for all the loss that is still being felt throughout our surrounding area and guilty because I was not in the midst of the first responders.

I want to do something of significance in remembrance of all those that were lost in the 9/11 attacks.

This Memorial Day let us remember the Men, Women and Children that have FALLEN on our own Soil.

Let us Never Forget!

Claude Bouchard Author of “Asylum” Author of Distinction

Posted in Author of Distinction by Katie Shea Design Roses of Distinction on September 4, 2011

Dr. Matthew Russell is married to Cassidy, father of Jennifer and Stuart, also the Managing Director of the Montreal Hospital for the Criminally Insane.

The story opens introducing Dr. Russell, an extremely overworked man who seems to be losing it in both his work life and his family life.  A story played out so many times in so many homes.

Dr. Russell’s wife Cassidy becomes distant and distrusting of the promises Matthew makes to become a better “Family Man” and Russell partly blames Cassidy for him becoming unglued at work.  He feels he is only doing his best by working hard and providing for his wife and family. Matthew promises to work harder on his family life and decides to take a long, overdue vacation in hopes of rebuilding what he has lost with Cassidy and the Children.

The author succeeds in making me fall in love with the Russell Family and the Vacation Dr. Russell takes them on.  I became absorbed and envious of the fairytale vacation that is so vividly portrayed by the detailed descriptions of the sights, sounds, tastes and jubilant emotions the family begins to feel for each other.  Needless to say The “Vacation” is colorful, adventurous and filled with intrigue.

Each page rendered me hostage to the drama that was subtly unfolding and also making me beg to know the conclusion.

This Novel is sheer genius!  I would love to see this acted out on screen to only heighten the drama of the emotions of each character.

I was introduced to the author’s writing a few years back when I read his first novel “Vigilante” http://amzn.to/BouchardClaude     I had downloaded it one night and ended up staying up all night to complete it.  My advice for Claude Bouchard Novel readers, get comfy and enjoy the ride it is worth it!

Linda Franklin Founder Shining Service Worldwide

Linda Franklin Founder of Shining Service Worldwide

Linda Franklin Founder of Shining Service WW

Linda Franklin created Shining Service Worldwide™ in November 2010.  She says, “it was destiny”  The whole idea started to germinate when women serving in Afghanistan emailed her saying that they read The Real Cougar Woman™ blog every day and how powerful they felt when they did.  They called themselves “The Combat Cougars” and they just wanted to say thank you for the valuable information she was providing them.

From that fateful day to this Linda has been committed helping all women connected to military service.  Their sacrifices are many and appreciation shows has been limited.  Like many women, they have fallen through the cracks.

Mission Statement – Shining Service Worldwide™

Shining Service Worldwide™ is an organization  that shows APPRECIATION and SUPPORT to women currently serving in the military, military vets and military spouses. Too often our females in service fall through the cracks and don’t get the attention they deserve, or more importantly, they need.  We want to help provide those resources for them.
Our program at Shining Service Worldwide™ is three fold:

  • Our Shining Service Blog is designed to encourage military women to use their voices and their stories to help reintegrate into civilian society.  It is also a resource showing them the help that is available to them from other sources.
  • The Shining Service Bracelet™ is our way of bring attention to our military women and also helping to fund our mentoring services.
  • Our Shining Service Makeover Missions™ are two-fold:
  1. The beauty makeovers, provided at salons all over the country, are the first step in reconnecting a woman to her feminine side
  2. The 3-month mentoring program, following the beauty makeover continues to build her self esteem and showing her she does have a voice what she is capable of accomplishing.  Each woman is provided with an executive mentor and a military mentor so all bases are covered.  A corporate work/study component is also available

Shining Service Worldwide™ is proud to be a special project under the umbrella of our Fiscal Sponsor United Veterans Beacon House, Inc. – a not-for-profit charitable organization dedicated to provided transitional housing to our nations veterans.

What People Are Saying

A note from karen

Here I am again on another assignment that I volunteered for, a 53 year old mother of 3 adult children and Nana to 4 grandchildren. I arrived here at Camp Eggers, Afghanistan in May of 2010 dressed in my ACU’s, a Kevlar (helmet), IOTV (bullet proof vest), my 9M on my hip and rucksack on my back, to a small FOB (Forward Operating Base) near the city of Kabul.

Linda, I want to thank you for giving me what you have with The Real Cougar Woman blog. I think without it, a lot of women here wouldn’t be where they are today.

The “shining service bracelets” are a blessing. They have brought so many women together, not for a cause, but for women period.

Jane Winslow Eliot  ” A Woman of Distinction”

Three Weeks ago today my dear friend Winslow emailed me that her Mother,  Jane Winslow Eliot passed away peacefully in her California home with Winslow beside her.

I never had the honor of meeting Jane Winslow Eliot but I feel I know her through the stories my friend Winslow has shared about her with all of us.

I have designed a Rose of Distinction as a Memorial for my friend Winslow and her family.

Winslow has been a dear friend and such a supportive inspiration to me and of my work.

I have used the following Excerpt borrowed from  http://janewinsloweliot.com/   as my inspiration for my Memorial Rose Design:

“We were traveling with you in Scotland…and we ran down to the boat house and there, sitting on a stone wall, was Aunt Jane in an elegant, deep blue gown with glittering, silvery threads, with her hair long and loose.  You were so delighted to see her wearing this and called it her Robe of Starry Brightness!  She looked like a goddess, smiling at us and laughing with joy to take a break from traveling, to be in a calm, lovely, easy place where she could refresh herself and array herself as the Wisdom Tree Woman that she truly is.”

Jane Winslow Eliot and her family have made enormous literary contributions that continue to impact  so many lives.

#GDandBurgers Wine Tasting/Pairing

Look at these great Twitpics from last night's #GDandBurgersevent

http://www.winetwits.com/events/images/5931

Our Dessert, a Cupcake by Mr. Cupcakes  http://mrcupcakes.com/  wearing a Cupcake Wrap designed to commemorate our WineTwits Virtual Wine Tasting/Pairing!

Tuesday July 26th, my husband and I participated in a

Virtual Wine Tasting Event Which was hosted by   http://winetwits.com

Georges Duboeuf’s Export Director Yann Bourigault and Chef Bob Waggoner, host of PBS’s Ucook with Chef Bob, conducted  a live Beaujolais and Burger Tasting on Tuesday, July 26 from 8:00PM EST, which was also streamed out to hundreds of other tastemakers from around the country. Chef Bob demonstrated three mouth watering burger creations, and Yann paired each burger with a fantastic Beaujolais from the cellar of Georges Duboeuf.  Contd…http://winetwits.com/events/5931

What is a Virtual Wine Tasting you might ask…..?

How did we participate in a Virtual Tasting?

WineTwits.com shipped 3 Bottles of the selected wine with wine tasting placemats, information on each wine to be tasted and recipes for the burger/sliders to be paired with each wine.

We were instructed to sign on http://winetwits.com   a little bit prior to the start time, have our burgers ready for the tasting/pairing and be ready to tweet as we followed Yann Bourigault and Chef Bob Waggoner live during the live tasting/pairing.

This was both I and my husband’s first ever virtual event and we thoroughly enjoyed it.  There was tremendous participation virtually and the tweets were flying as we all followed along tasting our creations and sipping each wine.

We enjoyed listening to the live stream and reading the tweets from all who participated.  I also received tweets from people in my stream wanting to know what was going on with this hash tagged event.  I then had the opportunity to answer briefly with a tweet.

I applaud http://winetwits.com, Export Director Yann Bourigault and Chef Bob Waggoner, host of PBS’s Ucook with Chef Bob for a successful Event.

I recommend stopping by http://winetwits.com

And/or Twitter http://twitter.com/#!/WineTwits and perhaps consider attending an Event either virtually or Live!

Wine Twits is an easy to use twitter-powered community bringing together wine enthusiasts to talk about wine, events and special offers. Wine Twits takes wine-related messages, using Twitter as the content platform, and organizes those messages by wine type, varietal, region, pairings and user ratings. You’re encouraged to rate the wines you’ve tasted on a plus scale. Use the plus symbol “+” (didn’t enjoy) to “+++++” (extraordinary).  Contd…  http://www.winetwits.com/about
